A roll of the dice for a quick, late season session at Flynns Reef with Phillip Island windsurf legend Jono.

After living permanently on the Mornington Peninsula I don’t get down to the island as often as I used to. It is hard to justify driving 1.5hrs to Woolamai when I can get similar conditions 10 minutes from home.

I do however make the trek to sail Flynns and Right Point as I love getting to sail more powerful reef breaks than most of the soft reefs on the Peninsula. Flynns typically works through the colder months, so getting a session at this time of year was worth a try.

This was a bit of gamble to drive down to Phillip Island as the swell was only borderline size, about 1.5m average on the Point Nepean buoy. The forecast was predicting a howling northerly though so I figured small sail, powered up, small waves – still should be fun after not much wind since our return from WA.

Turns out it was little more marginal than both Jono and I had hoped. He had already rigged a 4.0 when I arrived. I wasn’t convinced it was that windy so opted for 4.2, which was ok at times. Overall the wind hung NNW which lumps up the wave more and is basically straight cross shore. I probably would have a bit more fun with more sail as I was often a bit under cooked on the wave with a 4.2 and 69L.

Still, overall it wasn’t too bad and good to sail with Jono and Tom from SHQ. The Surftrax camera team were all there capturing the action, thanks to Anne-Marie, Manny and Mark for shooting.
